White Roofs Producing Multimillion-dollar Energy Savings Across the U.S.

Heat-Absortion-GraphToday, we examine the power of white roof coatings and how they are saving building owners across the United States hundreds of millions of dollars in net energy savings.

Back in 2008, a science research conference advised that if “cool roofs” were on top of more buildings in the United States, building owners could see up to $1 billion in net energy savings throughout the year. In addition to greater energy efficiency and cost savings, the installation of white roofing (or more commonly known as a popular segment of “green roof systems”) on top of commercial buildings would have a tremendously positive environmental impact.

White Roof Coatings Gaining in Popularity

With the release of the ENERGY STAR certification by the United States government, “ENERGY STAR roofing” is becoming increasingly popular throughout all areas of the United States. The ENERGY STAR certification is a federally recognized distinction that says a product meets high quality standards for energy usage, meeting that product gives greater energy efficiency and utility cost savings than the “typical” product available in a market.

Of the roofing products with the ENERY STAR certification, one product that is becoming very popular is elastomeric roof coatings. These coatings can be applied to any roof type and, when applied, form a seamless, white surface across a building top. A white roof surface can strongly reflect the sun’s UV rays off a building, dishing out tens of thousands of dollars in energy savings for just one building owner per year. Notably, Conklin elastomeric roof coatings reflect up to 85% of the sun’s rays. They are also the only roof coatings in commercial roofing to have up to an 18-year non-prorated warranty, increasing their customer value.

Roofs currently account for 25% of surface area in U.S. cities, and pavements accounted for 35% of surface area. Just these numbers alone illustrate the energy-saving power of these cool roof systems.

Conklin’s Energy-efficient Roofing Leading the Way

With the rising public interest in energy-efficient roofing, there emerges a great market opportunity for commercial roof contractors to take advantage of. Conklin, one of the most trusted brands in commercial roofing today, was the inventor of the popular acrylic roof coating that is so heavily used today. Since Conklin introduced its first acrylic roofing system almost 40+ years ago, Conklin roofing products have been installed on over 2 billion square feet of commercial roofing. As of now, even with their “generous” warranty coverage, Conklin roof systems sport a warranty claim rate of ¼ of 1 percent.

The green roof systems offered by Conklin also grant multiple other benefits:

  • Up to 30% savings in air conditioning costs
  • Up to 50% cost savings in avoided roof replacement
  • Reliable and proven roofing protection that lasts for up to 40+ years
  • Few upkeep and maintenance requirements compared to other roofing systems
  • Seamless, leakproof protection against current and future leaks
  • Certified fire resistance and strong protection against hurricane-grade winds

Particularly, Conklin roof materials are especially ideal for metal roofs and membranous roofs.
